Therefore, metaphysics according to realism is that the external world is a reality-it is a world of objects and not ideas. Epistemology deals with the knowledge-knowledge of this external world through the senses and scientific method and enquiry. Axiology in it is that realists reject idealistic values.International relations is commonly divided into two normative theories: idealism and realism. To state briefly, idealistic approaches aim for perfection and realistic approaches assume national interests motivate the nation-states, whose role is emphasized by realism.In philosophical value, the term Realism is used in three senses: 1. Realism as a direction opposite to nominalism and conceptualism (moderate realism) in medieval philosophy (a problem universals); 2. Realism serves for a designation of a philosophical direction of the new time and is resisting to idealism.
Idealism and Realism are two strongly opposed views of foreign policy. At the core of this opposition is the issue of power and security in politics. Realism establishes a separation between politics and ethics in order to understand and comprehend international events.Thus, this realism, from the other point of view, is called as idealism. Plato, in the doctrine about ideas, has given for the first time quite a distinct decision of a problem in the realistic spirit, and realists of all times see in Plato the prototype.
Realism and Liberalism are the two most prevalent ideologies in practicing and analyzing International Relations in the last two centuries. They are playing important roles in the states. They will directly affect the decision making of the governments and bring effects to the peace relations among countries.
